Events and Volunteer Opportunities

VOLUNTEERS
The restoration of the churchyard has been made possible by a great number of people giving their time, energy and expertise to advising, planning and working physically in the churchyard.
So - take a breath of fresh air and join us!
We are a diverse group of people, from students to senior citizens, from regulars to droppers in.
The time of our working sessions are:
Saturdays: 2-4pm.
Wednesday evenings: 5.30-7.30pm (Summer time)
Volunteers help by:
- Clearing overgrown brambles and ivy, rubble and accumulated litter.
- Developing a maintenance regime that encourages a variety of habitats while keeping access to the gravestones.
- Planting a variety of wild flowers in the different areas: meadow, woodland edge, bog, and hedgerows.
- Identifying birds, butterflies and plants.
- Weeding a wild flower Garden of Thanksgiving & Remembrance
- Planting and pruning conservation hedges.
- Laying woodchip paths and constructing bird boxes and insect homes.
- Planning and creating new habitats such as a butterfly garden
- Assisting with project administration.
- Increasing local interest in the project and recruiting more volunteers.
Tools are provided.
From time to time it is possible for volunteers to attend training courses run by nature conservation organisations.
EVENTS
Special working sessions are organised to coincide with national initiatives such as 'Student Volunteering Week' and 'CSV Make a Difference Day'.
It is hoped to plan events for local residents and families around other special days/weeks, e.g. a bird-watching session on 'Dawn Chorus Day' and a Community get-together on 'Seed gathering Sunday'. The churchyard is already much appreciated as one of the venues during the Cowley Road Carnival.
